SUMMARY:Effective Performance Portability
DESCRIPTION:Workshop\nHeterogeneous Systems, Performance, Workshop Reg Pas
s\n\nEffective Performance Portability\n\nHarrell, Kitson, Bird, Pennycook
, Sewall...\n\nExascale computing brings with it diverse machine architect
ures and programming approaches which challenge application developers. Ap
plications need to perform well on a wide range of architectures while sim
ultaneously minimizing development and maintenance overheads. In order to
alleviate these costs, developers have begun leveraging portability framew
orks to maximize both the code shared between platforms and the performanc
e of the application. We explore the effectiveness of several such framewo
rks through applying them to small production codes. Throughout the proces
s, we apply a logging tool to gather data on the development process. We u
se this information to develop metrics of application development producti
vity, which can be used to holistically assess how productively a performa
 nce-portable application was developed.
